This apartment (sleeps 4 + 1) is located in one of the oldest and most charming quarters of Rome. In the heart of ancient Rome, Appartamento Mattei is a wonderfully attractive 2nd floor flat, with air-conditioning and elevator. This area has narrow streets and the original buildings were not built for elevators and air conditioning, but the Mattei apartment, owned by one of the four most respected families in Lazio, is such a find. It is in the most desirable location imaginable on a small and lovely ancient square.

The apartment is on the second floor of the family palazzo, which was built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The private quarters contain an incredible art collection, which if you are very lucky, the owners might invite you to see. It has never been open to the public or listed in any art books and of museum quality. The apartment overlooks the small square, with its pretty fountain in the centre.

The location is also perfect since it is near the Tiber River next to Isola Tiberina (Tibernia Island) and the Teatro di Marcello. From here it is an easy walk to the Campo de' Fiori each morning to pick up flowers, vegetables and fresh bread at the daily morning open-air market. Later, guests can stroll to the Forum, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, or across the river to enchanting Trastevere, famous for its narrow streets and cozy restaurants. That said, you need not cross the river to find a restaurant. One of the top restaurants in Rome, Piperno, is 2 blocks away and another of our favorites is in the back of this palazzo, which covers almost a block. The location is 3 or 4 blocks from the Torre Argentina Square, a transportation hub, where guests can catch trams and buses to the Vatican, the metro and the central train station.

Enter the palazzo and walk up one flight of marble stairs or take the elevator to the second floor. Along the short corridor to the left is the bedroom with twin beds and a small balcony (with a view over the interior courtyard) and the bathroom (with shower), accessed from the hall. The apartment is very spacious (approx. 1200 square feet) with 9 ft. ceilings and large rooms. It is entirely private and utterly charming with terra cotta tiled floors and wood-beamed ceilings. Windows are double-glazed and have marble sills. The furnishings are newly restored, beautiful antiques from the family, and the architect-owner has taken care to use her impeccable taste to create elegant and historical space and at the same time the highest standard of modern comfort. It is fully air conditioned and heated.

There is a large living room with a sofa-bed and dining room, and completely equipped kitchen with marble counters, gas stove, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and table with chairs. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed with en suite bathroom with bathtub. The other bedroom has twin beds, and the bathroom, which is accessed from the hall, has a shower. There is also a tiny balcony with lattice and vines covering the view (not special) over the interior court. There is also a washing machine. Guests will have access to the palazzo's roof top terrace where there is plenty of space for table and chairs and plants. From here you can see part of the Victor Emanuele Monument at the Piazza Venezia and all of the pretty rooftops and skyline of Rome all around.
