This splendid Tuscan holiday villa sleeps 4+2, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a swimming pool.

La Fortezza is a charming historic fortress near the Versilian coastline in Tuscany, Italy. This completely renovated medieval castle (1000 years old and on the site of a Roman outpost) is situated against the splendid setting of the Apuan Alps.

The house lies 200 metres above sea level and enjoys magnificent views over the Versilian coast. This Tuscan holiday villa is surrounded by a stone wall, with a heavy gate leading you to a paved path, which crosses the garden to the house.

The owners have carefully carved a comfortable modern house from this medieval building. Each piece of furniture and art has been carefully selected to give the castle a clean and modern look, with soft delicate colors showing off the original granite floors, stone walls, huge fireplace, and outstanding views. With five terraces you have a 360 degree view onto the mountains, valleys, and the sea, and then onto the Isle of Gorgona and the Gulf of Portovenere.

This is the heart of one the most creative artistic areas in Italy. There are the Apuan mountains and the marble caves of Carrara, the quarries and bronze art foundries of Pietrasanta, where world-famous artists such as Botero and Mitoraj (to name but a few) come to work.

Villa La Fortezza comprises a main building, the fortress, and a beautiful tower. Both are skilfully and tastefully restored and surrounded by a large terraced garden covering 500sqm. The property is quietly located yet just 5km from the Versilian Riviera.

Every day a van comes to the village to sell groceries, bread, fruit and vegetables. All the other shops and supermarkets are 2.5km away. A very good restaurant lies 300m away.

Villa La Fortezza comprises two apartments connected by a garden. Each is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and interior decoration with the best modern Italian-designed furniture.

The main apartment has a double bedroom with en-suite full bathroom with bath and shower, a living room, dining room and modern kitchen, storage room and toilet. This apartment has a washing machine, dishwasher and fireplace. It's equipped with satellite television, internet access and hifi. Other facilities include a video, telephone, answering machine, vacuum cleaner, alarm clock, digital scales and video entry system. The kitchen has a fridge, oven, microwave, toaster, orange squeezer, ice cream machine, fresh pasta machine, food processor.

The dependance has a living room/dining room with a kitchen corner, double bedroom and full bathroom with shower. There is a fridge, satellite TV and internet access. There is a sofa bed in the living room if you want to sleep two extra people.

The property is surrounded by an ancient wall and olive groves. The apartments are surrounded by green gardens with fruit trees and flowers. There is also a vegetable garden where, in the summer, the owners grow fresh tomatoes, salad, onions, cucumbers, string beans, courgettes, eggplants (aubergines), peppers, basil and more.

There is an above-ground pool and five terraces, one of which forms a wonderful sun deck with a sun-worshipping mosaic. The terraces and gardens are fully equipped with deck chairs, parasol, tables and chairs and barbecue. Villa La Fortezza is only three minutes' walk on an old stone road through the very quiet old village nearby, and there are beautiful walking paths outside the village. In order to bring up luggage and shopping your hosts have a truck which the lady in charge of the house can drive.

The medieval village looks down on the Tyrrhenian sea, the Apuan Alps at the back. And from Villa La Fortezza you have a beautiful panorama stretching to the Maritime Alps in France (when it's very clear), the Gulf of Portovenere, the isle of Gorgona, Capraia and Corsica down to Pisa. On the coast lie Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio, where one can find shops and boutiques, night life and sports facilities ... all are 8–10km away from Villa La Fortezza.

Pisa and Lucca are 30km away; Florence 80km; Siena 150km (and there are wonderful little villages along the way); Portofino and Portovenere are 70km away; the yacht harbour at Viareggio is 8km; Pietrasanta 4km; tennis courts and golf course 5km; lively nightlife by the seaside, theatre, concerts, art exhibitions and opera at Torre del Lago Puccini 10km away.
